Waipio: Location, Capacity, and Operational History

Waipio Solar is a 45.6 MW solar photovoltaic project on land owned by Clearway Energy Group. The Project has been providing low-cost, clean energy to the Oahu grid since August of 2019 under a 22-year Power Purchase Agreement with Hawaiian Electric.

The site is also home to over 200 head of sheep who are shepherded by Koolau Ranchers. Waipio came online in August 2019 and has been providing clean renewable energy and grid services to the grid ever since, advancing Hawaii towards 100%.

Significantly contributes to Hawaii’s goal of 100% renewable energy by 2045.

Enough clean electricity to power more than 7,500 homes each year for up to 40 years.

Low pricing for renewable, non-fossil fuel energy source - a third the cost of fossil fuels at the time the project commenced operations.

Displaces approximately 183,986 barrels of oil over the term of the PPA.

Reducing the volatility of customer electricity bills.

Increasing resource diversity in both type and location for greater resilience.

Capitalizes on the limited availability of applicable State tax credits prior to their expiration and passes on the full benefit of these tax credits to customers/community.
